Holiday Shopping Guide from your friends at FCTC

Hey everybody!

So, you still haven’t gotten all your holiday shopping done? Neither have we. We’re glad you thought to turn to us, the absolute last resort holiday shopping list. This is a pile of stuff that our staff likes, that we think maybe resides somewhere in the same universe as the stuff we do, whatever that means. It’s stuff we like. And if you like us, we think maybe you’ll like it to.

For good measure, there are a couple of items in here that are strictly self-promotional. Just a heads up. But for the record, we have no affiliation with any of the companies represented here, and none of them is even probably aware of that fact that we’re recommending them, let alone paying us for it. This is just for you guys (and us). So, without further ado, our list:

Stuff you wear:

Camus T-shirt. Surely you’ve heard us talking about our musical in development, The Pestilence is Coming. Did you know that author Katharine Clark Gray used The Plague as strong inspiration?

Ha. Get it? Ha.

Stuff you read:

This book is amazing. Say what you will about Joe Papp, he changed everything, and for the better.

Absolutely essential. Spolin is a big deal over here.

Stuff you watch:

Keith Johnstone Trance Mask Workshop. Awesome.

Pretty amazing stuff. It’s easy to forget that theater can be this really important societal force, you know? There’s an episode of This American Life entitled Act V which covers the same subject matter - Shakespeare as criminal reformation - perhaps a little more effectively, but that’s just audio, and it’s free. So, you know, not ideal for a present. You can check it out here, though.

Other stuff:

This is it! The very song cycle on which our forthcoming eponymous musical is based! It rocks. For serious.

And listen to it on these. Cuz they’re slick as hell. Someone you know deserves some dope headphones.

3 inch Shakes! So, yeah, the Shakespeare-on-your-desk thing is played, sure, but we think this guy is really cute. What’s more, Jailbreak Toys, who makes this guy, makes some other really killer figures (the Obamas, Einstein, Darwin, Picasso, Kahlo, etc.) and we want to start leaning on him hard to do a playwrights series. I’d by Chekhov or O’Neill in a heartbeat.

Buy our mug! For all kinds of liquids! And don’t stop there! There are literally dozens of things you could put in this highly stylish mug. Pens, for instance! Who needs pens lying all over their desk? Corral those pens with this here mug, partner! Also recommended for coffee, tea, hot cocoa, soup, and dry cheerios for snacking on the couch with a blanket.

For the first night of Hanukkah, we give you the greatest gift we know - our artistic director Kevin’s mom’s latke recipe!

The story is that every year at Kevin’s synagogue, the moms and dads would bring in latkes for a Hanukkah celebration. Holly, Kevin’s (ironically named, but only for the purposes of this story) mom had developed this recipe, which leads to pretty awful-looking pancakes. And inevitably, every year, other moms would bring in clean-looking, pretty things, some shaped like menorahs or 6-pointed stars, while Holly carried a tray of these lumpy, Jackson Pollack-looking clumps of shredded potatoes.

And every year, Holly was the only one with an empty tray to bring home at the end of the party.

We wish you all the best in the coming year, and hope your holiday season brings you unbridled joy.

2 cups potatoes shredded (the recipe says 4-5 potatoes — honestly, I just do a bunch until it looks like I have a good amount)

1 medium onion shredded (sometimes I add another onion, depends on how the mixture looks)

2 eggs

1/4 cup matzo meal

dash of salt /pepper to taste

oil

Mix potatoes, onions, eggs, matzo meal, salt, and pepper.  Heat oil in skillet.  Drop spoonfuls of potatoes into hot oil. Flatten and flip when brown and crispy.  Add more oil as you cook. (Let it heat up before adding the potatoes or they get mushy.)

It’s seriously that simple, kids. Serve with sour cream and/or applesauce. Yum.

We missed the chance to pass along our tofurkey recipe at Thanksgiving, so you can expect that in time for Christmas. People eat turkey on Christmas, right? Right?

Don’t worry - we’re not going to be getting in the habit of posting TMZ videos.

As much as we truly loathe cell phone ringers in audiences (and believe us, we do), sure seems to us that Jackman and Craig handled this with much more class than Lady LuPone a few months back. (Remember that?) These guys are arguably more famous (read: able to get away with more crap) than our dear Patti, and still maintained some level of professionalism while dealing with the complete fucking idiot who came to see them.

Admittedly, Patti was in mid-song and didn’t have the option of pacing around and waiting, but still…
